Clinic Information
Caduceus

The Animal Clinic & Hospital was first opened in 1947 by Dr. Henry Zimet in the basement of his home on the corner of 6th & Washington where the Co-Op is now located. A few years later, he built his house and clinic on the corner of the Troy Highway and Logan Street where the original blacksmith shop was located. A horse shoe that Dr. Zimet found while excavating was placed in the entryway and can still be seen there today. As the business grew, Dr. Zimet found it necessary to add indoor runs in 1966 and an associate veterinarian, Dr. Richard Nelson, in 1973. With two doctors and more patients coming in daily, it was soon decided that even more room was needed, so in 1976,they added a larger reception area, office and exam rooms. Soon Dr. Nelson was a partner, and in order to cope with the increased need for ambulatory services a third doctor was added to the staff. Dr. Val Harris, who is now in Smoot, Wyoming, practiced two years before a new 1980 graduate, Dr. William Cash, joined the growing business. As Dr. Nelson moved on to Seattle to work in research, Dr. Donley Kubasch joined the clinic. Dr. Zimet retired in 1990 and is currently living in Blaine, Washington. In the same year, Dr. Steve Gardai became an associate veterinarian with the clinic, and in 1995, Dr. Kubasch moved on to open his own clinic. With a lot of hard work and dedication, Dr. Cash eventually became sole owner of the corporation. He retired in October, 1996 and currently lives in Moscow. The house that once was the home of Dr. Zimet and Dr. Cash is now incorporated into the clinic so that we are able to accommodate our patients, clients, and staff in a modern, spacious and convenient atmosphere. Presently the Animal Clinic & Hospital, P.A. is owned by Dr. Steve Gardai.

Surgery Suite: Our state of the art surgery suite features a sterile environment for performing all orthopedic and complex, soft tissue surgeries. It boasts two surgery units equipped with stainless steel, adjustable surgery tables, highly diversified lighting systems, cutting edge isoflurane anesthesia, and anesthesia monitoring with a pulse oximeter. The surgery room is easily isolated for asepsis and noise reduction via a sliding glass door attached to a glass wall. This allows for visual communication and additional lighting while limiting distractions, thus providing a clean, quiet, and focused environment.

Ambulatory Truck:We utilize a well equipped (including portable xray and ultrasound machines) ambulatory truck which enables us to provide veterinary care away from the clinic. Unfortunately, we are not able to have an on site facility for these animals. However, we can bring the doctor right to your animal or meet you at the Latah County Fairgrounds. We are available for equine reproductive work-ups including artificial insemination.
